Hippotherapy

I come to the Bay area repeatdly, but I can't walk yet. I'm learning to ride again . First, hippotherapy to learn to use my body again, then I hope to travel by horseback. I'm currently in Colorado. Please help or give guidance.

Horses in pasture

Been considering buying a horse for quite awhile now. I owned one before, had him boarded at a local stable, I used to feel so guilty because my horse had a typical paddock, with an area of shelter, although, he could not canter or trot if he choose to do so.
I made the decision when I bought another horse? The horse would have to be in pasture, after all, a horse NEEDS to be that, a horse! And horses aren't meant to be couped up, I don't care how fancy the barn/stable is!
Has anyone ever bought a horse from someone whom boarded the horse at a stable? And put the horse out to pasture?
How did that work out? The pasture I have in mind is absolutely wonderful, over 30 acres with much room to run, graze, roll freely,and be a horse!
ANY input would be greatly appreciated- thank you

Orinda Horseman's Association

Hi there,

I am thinking of sponsoring a horse at the Orinda Horseman's Association where you have access to an incredible amount of trails. It's insanely inexpensive to board your horse there (like $250 for 6 months) because it's a coop which rents EBMUD lands. There are 10 stalls but they are usually reserved for injured horses so the horses are all in one herd in a pasture which rotates. It can be up to a half hour walk to get your horse! They have a pretty nice outdoor arena and a couple of jumps, too.

Anyone else board there? Or have access to Tilden Park trails or the trails around the San Pablo resevoir? I'd like to find someone fun to ride with. I also think there are plenty of horses out there who need sponsors if you are a rider looking for a horse.

I'm an experienced Western trail rider. I've owned two horses; been riding most of my life; for me it's always Safety/Responsibility/Awareness First! I've sponsored at stables in Mt. Diablo Park (Bright Future Farms, former Pine Creek & Western Trail Ride Adventures and Anthony Chabot Park (Piedmont Stable, former Bill Pickett Riding Academy) several times.

I' m 59, 5'7" 160-65 lbs. I ride with light hands and have a pretty good seat; prefer one-handed, using my legs style of riding. Also, prefer "bomb proof", smooth gaited, trail savy horses that understand and go well with neck reining; prefer sitting deep as opposed to posting. I've ridden with people and several hours/miles alone. I'd very much like to sponsor. Ask them to "please co-sponsor and push for the passage of H.R. 503/S.311 to protect horses from slaughter".

Since I started training this way I have a great new relationship with my horse. She learned to trust me and she has shown me a very friendly side of her, which I haven't seen before. Here is where I learned it, does anyone else here work with bridleless training?

Bridleless Training is for the rider as well as for any breed of horse in any discipline. The important benefit of the rider's use of seat and leg aids is stressed, taking the emphasis off the hand aids which allows the rider to communicate more clearly with the horse. You become a more confident rider and improve rider balance problems caused by improper use of your hands. You'll learn to read your horse and understand where he carries his natural balance. Horse slaughter resumes

Another court is allowing the Belgian owned DeKalb slaughter house in Illinois to resume slaughtering horses pending their appeal of an earlier federal court decision that they could not pay USDA inspectors. http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-070502horse,1,7910235.story?track=rss

Along with the federal bills to stop horse slaughter in the US AND the transportation of horses to Canada and Mexico for slaughter, Illinois has a bill that passed the State House a couple of weeks ago and is currently in committee in the State Senate. Anyone in the state reading this, please contact your State Senators. The rest of us need to continue to encourage our Representatives and Senators to pass the federal bills, HR 503 in the House and S 311 in the Senate.

This must be stopped! Please pass this along and it is crossposted to the usual suspects.

Pastures are MUCH more healthier all around for a horses sanity, health rather than a stable with small paddocks and stalls.

My Black 89 Ford Probe GT was stolen in W. Berkeley last night

Sadly, my 89 Ford Probe GT was stolen from right in front of my house in West Berkeley sometime last night (Friday) between midnight and 7:30am. As it's a pretty distinctive car, I thought it was worthwhile to send out a couple of pictures in case anyone sees it. The license plate is 4JMX-985 and it has a gray interior (when it was taken, it had a dark green towel and some dog leashes in the back seat). I'm really hoping someone took it out for a joyride and it will end up being found abandoned somewhere.

Saddle for sale

Hey y'all...not quite sure what kind of riders are on this tribe...but I have a cross-country saddle for sale. It is a Cliff Barnsby, 17.5 in seat....suitable for a wide girth horse. I no longer ride...and this is one of the last things I have hung on to. This is a super comfy saddle...and got me through many bucking sessions with my wild boy. I want someone to enjoy it as much as I did...please spread the word to your friends.

Worst barn in the bay area Park Pacifica

Ask anyone who has ever had a horse at "Park Pacifica" in Pacifica it is the worst barn on the planet.
Before you board a horse call the Pacifica Police and ask them how many calls they respond to at that barn each month.

Or go to any other barn in the bay area were you'll find old boarders they'll tell you of the abuse of horses at Park Pacifica.

I had a horse there for a bit, they don't feed the right amount, always an under-feed of poor quality,
The trail is death to numbers of horses over the years who have fallen of the trail only to meet with a painful death rolling down the side of a hill.

The managers are crazy, ask the Pacifica Police how many of the complaints they receive are about them

Stable Recommendations

I’ve been an equestrian my entire life, and since moving to SF I haven’t ridden at all (so sad!) mostly because I don’t have a car or my own horse. Can anyone recommend a stable in the bay area that is accessible by BART/bus? Does anyone have any suggestions at all? I know the Golden Gate Stables closed down in the city, and I don’t know where else to look. Thanks.

I'm a certified massage therapist looking to start riding again. I learned Eastern as a little girl, then rode Western as a teen. I'm interested in riding English again (possibly eventing or dressage--not jumping), but don't have access or much in the way of spare cash.

If you're interested in trading massage sessions for riding lessons, or know someone who might be, let me know. I'm versed in Swedish, Shiatsu, Deep Tissue, sports and other modalities...I kept a horse for several years, so I'm also well-versed in stable chores! :)

North Bay Boarding

Clipping your horse.

So do you think it's to late in the season to body clip your horse? I have a dapple iron gray, and I was reading in _Grooming to Win_ that clipping the new summer coat that is coming in could make the coat dull. He usually has a lovely soft slick summr coat, and I'm afraid it won't be as nice. I'm also afraid it might make him look whiter (I'm not ready for him to be white yet!).

He does need to be clipped if I'm goign to keep working him. Porr guy gets to hot to quick. He's in a 16x14 paddock and wears blankets most of the time, so I'm not worried about him being cold.

Oh, and do you think that the weather here is cool enought to warrant a quarter sheet on a body clipped horse. I thought it would be the polite thing to do, beign as he'd be all naked and all. :)

Any thoughts?

Bay Area Clinics

Wendy Murdoch (www.murdochmethod.com) will be doing a clinic with Whisperwood Farm at Arriba Vista Ranch in Sunol (east bay) April 3rd and 4th (possibly 5th if we get additonal riders).

Wendy Murdoch is a 4th Level Centered riding instructor and writer of a soon to be published work _Simplify Your Riding_.

Auditing is $35 and sessions are $115 per person, per day (you can ride one or both days) and you'll be in a group of 4 or 5.

email tribe@levanah.com if you want more info. We try to have her out every 6 months or so, so let me know if you want to be reminded when she comes out again!
